Ernest E. Boyd, 93, of Rapid City and formerly of New Underwood, passed away on Tuesday, September 25, 2012 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Ernie was born in Hockessin, Delaware to Ernest and Della Boyd. He had one brother and two sisters, all which have preceded him in death. Ernie's father taught him the carpentry trade at an early age which he did for most of his working career of 50 years. In the later part of his career he worked as a Millwright. He also worked for South Dakota Housing Authority. He proudly served his country in the Army Air Force from 1941-1945. During WW II he was stationed in Africa and Italy. While stationed in the USA , in Sioux Falls, S.D., he met Nell. They married in 1945 in Pennsylvania and lived there five years. Their first two children were born in PA. Then they relocated to Sioux Falls and then Rapid City. Ernie and Nell also lived in New Underwood, SD before moving back to Rapid City in 2009 for health reasons. While living in New Underwood he volunteered with the fire/rescue department as an EMT for 20 years. At an early age in PA he joined the Boy Scouts and stayed active in it throughout his life. All three of his sons were Scouts. He retired from being troop leader after 30 years, but remained active as an advisor until 2009. He was a proud member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters & Jointers of America Local #587, which he joined in 1949, a life member of the VFW Post #1273, the American Legion Post #500, and the Boy Scouts of America. He is survived by his wife Nelvina (Nell) Boyd of Rapid City, 1 daughter, Theresa (Terri) Lockwood of Clifton, CO, and 3 sons, Wade (Karen) Boyd of Battleground, WA, August (Gus) (Janet) Boyd of San Diego, CA, and Douglas (Ginger) Boyd of Phoenix, AZ., eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. He will always be loved and missed by the family he leaves behind. Visitation will be on Friday, October 5 from 5 pm to 7 pm at Kirk Funeral Home. Funeral services will be on Saturday, October 6 at 10:00 am at the funeral home. Interment with military honors will be held on Monday, October 8 at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
